As a theatre artist Onalea has worked on many diverse projects from black box theatre to the big house. She spent 7 years as an ensemble member of One Yellow Rabbit Performance Theatre, performing extensively across Canada playing roles like Sylvia Plath in Sylvia Plath Must Not Die, Edith in Blake Brooker’s adaptation of Leonard Cohen’s Beautiful Losers and as a member of the Maverick think- tank in the brilliant beat poet oratorio, Dream Machine. Other favorite work with OYR includes playing the near but never dead Penultama Arcane in the Cabaret hit musical In Klezskavania (OYR, Plaid Tongued Devils), and creating the role of Suicide girl in yoga.calm.
Other all time favorite singing roles include: Playing a street singer in Bernstein’s MASS with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, (Hans Graf conducting), singing in an electonica soundscape to accompany the 1920’s horror classic The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (by Edmonton’s Dave Clarke), originating the role of Hannah in Dandi Production’s The Mysterious Maestro which performs with a symphony orchestra and being the only female singer in Zappa’s Little Creatures, a burlesque extravaganza with the Whip it out Ensemble.
Favorite selected show credits include: Squeaky Fromme in Assassins, Cordelia in Falsettos, Brooke in Ben Elton’s Popcorn, Sabina Spielrein in Why Freud Fainted, Joni Mitchell: River (Betty Mitchell Award), (Alberta Theatre Projects); Time After Time: The Chet Baker Project (Crow’s Theatre); The Alan Parkinson’s Project (Ghost River Theatre), Cinderella in Into The Woods (Citadel); and Drood in The Mystery of Edwin Drood (Vertigo).
Onalea has done her share of hoofing as well being a part of classic musicals such as Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Hello Dolly, Anne of Green Gables, and Cabaret to name a few.
Working as a theatrical interpreter of song and text and creating original works that exist in the niche between music and theatre are Onalea’s current passions.
